Fun for all...

Well, Christmas never disappoints!  We didn't have the grandkids with us but today... with Skype, speaker phones, Instagram, messaging  and email on the phone it was a day for sharing everything all  day long. Oh how I wish they were all here but they weren't so we made the best of it!!! Now, we did enjoy having my son and his wife here but they do not have little "people" just a family of pets!  They truly enjoy all 5 - 3 dogs and two cats!!!

I wanted to share my last quilting project I did for Christmas.  It is now with my granddaughter and I think she loves it... or at least mommy does!  Emma is only 8 months so she really cant share her "likes" yet :)

"Sophie's Quilt" - A Jo-Ann Mullaly pattern. Fun to make and this one I hand quilted!

And here is the owner....Emma Joyce....
I agree , she is adorable isn't she???

So now I am back in my sewing room doing prep work for a January class I will be taking. It is fun to take a little time without pressure to complete projects that I think will be done long before needed - WRONG!!!!
But....I enjoyed making all I made this year...

Hope each of you had a very Merry Christmas....and you look forward to all good things to come...

Remember - SMILE always...

Almost here....

I am sure all of you are busy with last minute prep... either food to cook/bake, presents to wrap or even the unthinkable present to buy!!!!!
The fear is I will not be ready but I always am....so for now I will stop and enjoy what the season is all about!!! friends, family and kindness to all....

My last post I told you I would be back with a great gift I received at the Loft Christmas party....My hubby put it up yesterday and do I love it......take a peek...

This is an "old" door that has been cut in half. Not sure if I got the top or the bottom :).  The Santa was a gift we offered at the shop. This was displayed as is in our store - how lucky am I.

This is the new "home" for my "door".  I just love it...After Christmas Santa will take a break for the year and I just can't wait to see what seasonal things I can hang on the door....Any suggestions??

I want to wish all my blog friends a very Merry Christmas...
Enjoy your day with all that brings joy to you and yours....

Merry Christmas from San Diego....

Busy, busy with much to do...

I have been very, very busy but as the days before Christmas grow near I am feeling good....

I tackled a few big quilting projects for this year and as always - my time management was a bit off.  I kept saying I had "x" number of week to finish and THEN I was under the gun!!!  I made it and am I ever pleased that I completed what I started.
A few items I won't show until after Christmas but I do have a few goodies to share with you today...

The shop where I work,  -The Country Loft -has a Christmas party each year.  We draw names and bring or make something for our special friend.  It is a big secret for months (since we draw names in the summer) and then the day of the party you hope you did a "good thing" for your pick.  Well this year I was pleased with what I chose to do for my special friend.....and ALSO so happy with my gift that I will share after my hubby gets it hung this week-end...:-).....

This is what I made for my special friend...

I made 4 little quilts from a booklet that I found at Temecula Quilt Co "A Collection of Small Vintage Quilts". I rolled them and used this fun wire basket to place them in.
Here are the 4 I selected...

This was such a fun project.I wish I had the time to complete all that were in the booklet but...not to be :(

I told you I would share my gift when it gets hung this week-end but I will share this adorable angel that was on the front of my gift.

Isn't she cute...the body is a towel and the wings are handmade and quilted.  I just love her....

Today I am wrapping, and will do a little baking shopping.  Remember - I have been busy quilting and have a few catch up  things to get done.

I will be back soon...have a fun day...

Remember - SMILE always...

Happy Thanksgiving...

I'm having a day with a list a mile long and I am jumping from one thing to the next so I thought I would just take a little break....
and wish all of you  a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

I love getting the table set.  It's my spot to remind myself that family and friends sitting at our table create the real meaning of Thanksgiving....

To all of you, to friends far and near, to family that couldn't be with us and to everyone else....you are certainly in my thoughts...

Better late than never :)

Happy Friday evening all....

I did say I would be back Tuesday - I never made it.  Today I saw a special Friend "Kim" and I told her I would get busy and give the update I promised :)

My last post was all the fun we had at the Loft for our Christmas Open House.  What I was holding until Tuesday were the pictures of our backyard.  Our little house not only is special inside but the girls do everything to make the outside special as well....

Remember - Christmas in San Diego...

The backyard had so many cute items to take home...trust me...many filled their stockings with many fun things....

This is the shed...the antique heaven to all that know the Country Loft.  Decorated and ready to greet our friends....

I thought I had several more pictures but they are not in my Picasa album.  Did I just think I took them :)  Oh well, you can see we had a wonderful day and in every direction we were ready for CHRISTMAS.....

We had a very busy week, and were visited by all that couldn't make it Saturday.... Take a peek at the Country Loft Blog and see the great kits we had...

Now...I want to share the cutest little munchkin with you...her name Emma....she is just 6 months old and already winning all hearts that come her way....

Her moomy send a picture with the caption..."got the wrong size"  no matter what she is just the custest...
I know, I am the Grammy but she is a very special little girl....

I will be working at the Loft tomorrow and then on Sunday - prep begins for Thanksgiving.  I am cooking for just 6 this year.  I love cooking for this special day...easy and yummy!!!

Hope you have a great week-end and do something enjoyable...and do it with those you love :)

Couldn't ask for any better.....

WOW....yesterday was our Christmas Open House at the Country Loft...a huge success in every way!!!
The weather was perfect - low 60's with a few clouds and a bit of sun.  For San Diego that is the perfect fall/winter day.   It was such fun to see our favorite shoppers arrive in hoodies, boots, long pants and scarfs.  We don't get to do that very often here in So Cal :)
This last week the entire crew of "elves" worked to get the shop ready leaving no detail unattended to.  It was such fun to see it come together.  I can't tell you all the oohs and ahas I heard or.. the phrase "I need to get one of those" but it was several times that's for sure!!! Our job was to get the trees up, the decorations out and the trees decorated with some wonderful ornaments - by the way - they were all for sale. The shop has "Christmas" in every corner....so the "eye candy" was to die for....
At the Loft our open house is called "Kit Day".  For many weeks prior to our Open House the days are filled with kitting some of our favorite things. I can't tell you how many different kits we had but it is always greatly anticipated to see what kits we selected. Trust me...they don't last very long!

So, let me take you on a tour of our great shop!  Hope you like what you see :)

Can't forget outside...Joe (the owner with his wife Sharon) tends to getting the house decorated with lights.  We do appreciate all you do Joe!!!!

Our trees are all different sizes (and all for sale).  This one is done with snowman.  How fun huh!!!

Here are two more.  All the houses on the tree light up!  Awesome!!!

My favorite spot...our mantel.  It is such a focal point in our store and this year was no exception!

A close up of one of our most popular kits!!  MERRY CHRISTMAS....

Our wool room (yes we have a room just for wool) was so much fun!!!

and lets not forget the kitchen :)  This tree was just adorable!

and the gang of elves....
Deby, Donna, Mindy, Jayne, Susy, Colleen Tina, Sharon and Kathy...

Hope you enjoy!!!  I will be back tomorrow and take you outside :)  well maybe Tuesday, I work tomorrow :)

Hope you have a great Sunday and do something fun!!!!

Until later...

Learned something today.... :-)

Remember yesterday I was just so frustrated with fabric selections?  I really thought I had lost the knack of putting fabrics together.

Today I went to a class given by a great quilt teacher.  The class was not a specific project but if you had taken a class from Catherine (the instructor) in the past and had questions or were stumped she welcomed you to come by for assistance  I am so glad I went!!!!!   It was just a "good thing".

She did answer the few questions I had relating to a pattern I was going to start right after the new year.  It was a class she taught at the Country Loft while I was working so I just got the pattern.  The extra help today was just what I needed!

BUT....the best part...I told her about my frustration with the quilt I had made (you saw it yesterday) and how unhappy I was with it.  She was familiar with the pattern and when I was telling her my sad story she asked a few questions...yes, I had used just a few fabrics, yes it looked blah and yes I didn't like it!
Her first comment -  (not quoting but this was the gist) well that is a scrappy pattern and the blocks are large so you lost the look of what it was intended to be...wow!!!! She was right - it was blah and putting it on point (which I considered) may have helped but the blah was still going to be there....

RESULT - I am taking the blocks apart and adding new fabrics (scrappy ones).  It won't be a total loss but I learned that others can really help when we get stumped!
I am anxious to change it - its fun to learn something and then correct it with what I've learned.

Take a look!

My finished blocks...

See the difference - why didn't I see it!!!

So, I look forward to getting this done and then liking it!  I will also enjoy taking the blocks apart - am I crazy - well, maybe a little but I am OK with that!

Hope you learned something "fun" today...it is a good feeling!

Enjoy your week-end and....

Busy, busy, busy....

Happy November 1st....where does the time go?

The days just fly...I wish I had more hours in a day and at least one "FREE" day a week to catch up :)

As you know, I have been working on a sampler this entire year.  My last post shows all but one block completed.  We have one class to go and it is then ready to put together.  My problem,  I got this far and decided I didn't like the fabric selection I was using....It has blues, browns and a pop of cheddar.  I intended to sash with gold and do a piano border of all my fabrics.  Just couldn't do it.  Instead of bagging it up and forgetting about it (have you ever done that with a project?) I played with it for several weeks and have decided that the border will change to  something simple and the colors will change to blues.

These pictures don't help you see but I do like it and believe it will be OK.  This project will not get completed until  January but I will finish it!!!!

Now...another project I am doing and again not sure I like it!  Am I having a quilters challenge?  For some reason I can't decide what colors I like - darks, lights, or what!!

These next two pictures are a pattern by Geoff's mom.  I loved the pattern but again I am faced with a challenge...squared up or on point?  What do you think?

OR

This one will be just fine once quilted but my visual in planning is not what I created :)
Oh well....be patient with yourself jayne...

Now what am I sure about....these little munchkins bring all the joy I need in life...how lucky we are!!!!

Cooper our fireman and Emma our little ladybug!!!! She is not to sure about this Halloween thing but she is certainly doing her best :)

And last but not least....we have family back in CT and they did very well with Sandy.  For all those that face huge challenges we keep them in our hearts and prayers...

Have a great day everyone and no matter what....

PS - will be back soon :)

lesson learned!

I have been quilting on and off for many years.  I always hear people discuss the "design board" and I just never saw the value - WRONG!!!!

I have been working on a 12 month Sampler quilt in a monthly class.  (Yes, I have shared blocks on other posts.) This project has been fun and frustrating at times.  For the most part the sampler is very much like the Dear Jane quilt, as a matter of fact I have seen several of my blocks in my Dear Jane book. The blocks will finish at 6 inches and as you can see many have several pieces....

Yes, I am getting to the design board :)
I have just one class to go and during our last class we discussed how to set our blocks for completing the top. It was suggested that we put them on our design board and look at it often to see where you wanted to place them  I offered "I don't have a board I just use the floor or my bed".....well, I was encouraged to create a design board.  I don't have room in my sewing room so I used my guest room and it is a now up and telling me I should have had it up long ago!!

I have moved the blocks umpteen times and after taking pictures this morning I will be moving them again!!
This concept, used by most quilters, is invaluable when you are quilting with several fabrics or multiple block designs. It really lets you do your best when placing your squares.  It has taken me a while to take the step but trust me, a design board will always be a part of any quilt I make.

My first picture...

Notice the block righ in the center, it is no longer there:)

The fabric to the right will be "fussy cut" for sashing between the blocks.

I'm still not sure I like this quilt but I have learned much through the process and that I wouldn't change.  Nor sure if it's my fabric selection or what it is that bothers me but I will forge ahead and finish it.  At that time I can decide if I like it or not.

Lesson learned so far - use a desigh board!  It's a very "good thing".

Hope you all have a great Sunday and then even a better week!

My bit of sunshine!!!

Good morning all...
I just wanted to share a "happy moment" with you.  As most of you know, my daughter and her family live in Seattle so we don't get much face time with our little treasures - Cooper & Emma.  They were with us in August but oh how they change in just days.

My daughter is great about Skyping and sending pictures.  Last night I got a new picture that really made me miss them even more - if possible!!!!

Take a peek....
Cooper is really getting into entertaining Emma.  He now realizes she is more than a little thing that took time away from him :)  and he is so enjoying her.
We miss them so but we are also so pleased we get to share some of these great shots!!

Hope we all have a great day today and if you have little ones - give them a hug even if they are far away!

Oh where oh where have I been....

Each day I tell myself I will post on my blog....you know the rest of the story :)

It is getting close to starting Christmas goodies so some of what I am doing I will not share but I have two things I will tell you about!

This past Saturday I taught my first class at the Country Loft.  I had taught many, many years ago but this was my first shot as a new teacher at the Loft.

"Christmas Table Runner"
It was a pattern I did last year around Christmas.

I had just a couple of students but that was just right for my first class.  Both were great gals which made it fun but I was also able to check my directions - worked pretty good!!

Colleen's fabric selection

Wish I had tons of pictures - I took my camera but left the "card" at home in the computer. I was not happy with myself!!!  I will try to get completed projects to share but this is one shot I took with my phone.  Notice the fabric selection - not at all like mine but it was fun to watch it grow.

Here is my first pattern....they went to the store today.  We also made a few kits.  Our friends at the Loft just love kits.
Not the best picture but you get the idea...

So my second thing to share - remember waaaaaay back......I was working on a sampler?  It has continued since January.  Well,  this last class just got me...paper piecing curved edges, baskets and STRESS!!!!! I did complete my six blocks for the month but it took some support from others in the class.  The good thing - I will have a completed quilt that I know has a great story to tell :) by the end of the year....

25 of 30 complete!!!!

I have been fighting with Picasa all afternoon so my day is just about at the "get dinner" started time!  I love having a nice meal for my "best friend" when he gets home so I better get busy.

Things will settle a bit, I think.... so I will be back soon.  Until I do enjoy your cooler weather if you are having any, we will deal with the heat here in San Diego for a little while longer if we must!

I read on a post today - "I slowed to a wander on Sunday. It felt good to be so lazy and slow."

Maybe we should all try it!  Until next time...

A final few.....

I wanted to show a few last pictures from our quilt show at the Country Loft.  People are still talking about our success.  Just to share...we brought in about $10,000 for our charity, breast cancer research.  I would say that was very successful!!!

The last few pictures are again, from our students and Loft friends....take a peek!

I love baskets!

This is a popular pattern and what I love about it is - fabric selection changes it completely!

I love this and look at all the work!!

This is one I did...just had to share :)

and finally!!!!  our little mascot Reed.  He visits us often and the day wouldn't have been complete without him!! His Mum Mum works at the loft so he visits us often...what a joy he is!
 Love you Reed :)

So that's the end of my pictures for this year.  I am working on several projects right now but most I cant share because I don"t want to give away my secrets.

I will be teaching  my first class in a few weeks at the loft and I need to get a material list done for the store.  Guess I better get busy!

Enjoy your day and find something fun to do....that is my plan!

Opening chaos...

I just wanted to share a few photos of the opening minutes of our quilt show!  I was taking pictures and trust me, I quickly backed up for protection :)

It was all in fun but since many had been waiting in line for a few hours they were on a mission!
Nothing better than a quilt show and sale!!!!!

Now for a few quilts from the backyard.  Students and friends of the Loft do beautiful work.  I will share a few today and will continue to share as the days go by.  Hope you enjoy!

This picture doesn't do justice to this quilt but trust me - it is beautiful.  It is all wool and it is a selection of Kathy Cardiff mats.

This is just fun and makes me SMILE....not a Halloween person but this is tempting :)

:Love, these quilts...I have not done one yet but so tempted!

Whimsical and fun...It's fun to see these being make. Each little creature comes to life in the process of the class....they certainly are happy little friends!

Hope I didn't share more than you wanted but I love letting everyone see what we do!!

Off to work on a few projects I have going.  Hope you are doing the same...

Until I come back to visit you again....

WOW....

What a fun day - the Country Loft Quilt sale and show has concluded for 2012!  What a success!!!!

I can't even begin to tell you the fun I had yesterday!  So many quilts and so many eager friends buying for such a great cause!  It was truly a "feel good" time!

I will share over the next few blogs the days events.  For now, lets start with the set up.  What a great team process.  I am the "newbie"  so I followed directions well - at least I think I did :)

The front yard was for the sale and the backyard was the sharing area.  The sharing area  are projects made during the year by friends that take classes throughout the year.

Backyard -  Sharon the owner  (left) and Kathy the manager sure keep things moving to get all ready.  They are a great team and trust me - leave no detail undone!

Backyard - Colleen and I hanging quilts.  Colleen was a pro and I did what I was told!  Couldn't do this event without much laughter!!!!

Backyard - Sharon made sure that every inch of yard was ready to display items!

Our classroom was the center of activity.  The girls knew exactly what was going where.  Glad that wasn't my job :)

FY set up - Tina has been doing this for some time and I can tell you she knows exactly what needs to be done.  She is here setting up the sale area.  Tina is part of the "Sit and Stitch" group that meets weekly to get all the goodies made and ready for sale.  More on this amazing group down the road!

These were the "very" early girls that had been waiting for some time.  Not 10am yet but trust me, this line will grow.

The set up is as much fun as the actual sale.  I will share more tomorrow.  Hope you enjoyed seeing this and if you live in the area and came to visit  - we hope you had a great time.  For those far away - maybe a trip to San Diego next August should get put on your bucket list!!

Have a great Sunday!

Until later ---
